Bernard G. Younker
"Bernie" was born to Benjamin and Esther (Hedgepeth) Younker in Wilsey, Kansas. The dust bowl blew the family to Grand Junction, Colorado and later the family moved west to Portland, Oregon. Having enough credits as a 17 year old junior he graduated from Benson High and joined the Army Air Corps with the hopes of becoming a fighter pilot. The Air Corps had other plans and he became a flight engineer assigned to a B-24 training group. Upon discharge Bernie returned to Portland and worked for United Airlines as a mechanic, where he met a charming airline radio operator named Ruth Bornemann, after a six month courtship they married on May 15, 1949. The couple lived in Portland, Palmer Alaska and back to Portland again before settling into the home they built near Corbett, in the Aims area. They welcomed son Brent in 1951 and daughter Brenda in 1953. Bernie worked as a diesel mechanic for a Portland trucking company, till he and Ruth ventured into the realm of being a small business owners in 1970 opening Taylor Rental (Total Rental) in Gresham and B & R Rental in Boring, Oregon in 1985. Bernie was a volunteer fireman for the Corbett Rural Fire District for eight years, leaving the department in 1979. A few years later he returned as a member of the Corbett Fire Board on which he served for 28 years. In February 2020 declining health and assistance needs precipitated his move to Elizabeth's Care Home Wood Village, Oregon where he received excellent care. He passed December 14, 2020 with family at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bernice and loving wife of 70 years Ruth. He is survived by his son Brent (Carolyn), daughter Brenda, grandsons Troy (Celia), Travis (Tara), six great granddaughters, one great grandson, and three nieces. A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 28, at 2 pm at Aims Community Church, 44510 Connett Road, Corbett, Oregon.
