Lawrence Marvin Skidmore, a longtime resident of the Portland area and dedicated supporter of the Democratic party, died July 4 after a long fight with brain cancer. He was 79.
He was born to Marvin and Edith Skidmore in Portland, Ore., where he was raised. He graduated from Franklin High School and attended Reed College for undergraduate studies and University of Puget Sound for graduate school.
Larry worked for most of his life in marketing, but his real passion was building a better society through politics. He was an ardent supporter of the Democratic party in his later life, serving in multiple volunteer and leadership roles, including Chairman of the Democratic Party of Clackamas County from 2010 to 2014.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn Donovan; his siblings, Steve Skidmore and Darlene Weisen; his children, Jeffrey Skidmore, Jill Showalter, Julie DeVore, Nathan Skidmore, Sarah Sell; stepdaughter, Kim Wong; stepson, Michael Schmunk and his 13 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and stepdaughter, Janell McNally.
The family will be holding a private burial and a memorial when safe to gather. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who wish to honor him make a donation in his name to Providence Home Services/Hospice at PO Box 3335 Portland, OR 97208-9770.
