In Burton's early twenties, our nation was deeply engaged in the Korean War. He felt compelled to serve, and enlisted in the United States Army in 1952. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

In 1960, Burton married Rhoda Markley, and the couple had two children, Amy and Scott. Although they later separated, the two remained friends until Rhoda's passing in 2001.

After receiving his Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon, Burton started his own advertising and public relations business through which he represented numerous Oregon companies, and worked with media and graphic arts. He held several other titles with news media companies, which included Copyeditor for The Oregonian.

Burton favored neatness, organization, and straight, equal lines; he excelled in his role as editor for whichever project he was tasked to oversee.

Burton enjoyed many hobbies, but especially loved sports; notably golf and football. He was an avid reader, and would often be found with a good book in his hands.

Burton passed away at home, in Mulino, Oregon, with his family at his side. A funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m., Monday, December 20, 2021, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service with military honors will follow in Willamette National Cemetery.

Burton is survived by his children, Amy Xavier and Scott Benson; four grandchildren, Louisa, Timothy, Scott, and Thomas; and eight great-grandchildren.
