Carol Erdman, née Mitchell, born to Thelma and Richard on November 15, 1942 in Kamiah, Idaho, died peacefully on her 79th birthday. After a Mormon upbringing in Idaho that would help define the contrasts she explored in herself throughout life, Carol moved to Portland to finish her English degree at PSU, and never left.

Not one to be easily categorized or to live by the rules of others, Carol was many things: poet, performer, massage technician, loving mother, "literary aunt", avid and creative gardener, and a lover of stories. She brought an observant and ever-curious writer's eye to her life and the lives of those around her. She had a whimsical and sometimes sharp wit, which could be brought to bear when she sensed someone was taking themselves too seriously. Full of wisdom, originality, and insight, Carol was eminently quotable. She shared her family's love of music and took great joy in following her son's music career.

She's remembered by her son Jesse Emerson and his father John Emerson, and her nephew, Rick Jacobsen, in Portland; her niece, Shelley Jacobsen, and grand-niece, Thea Jacobsen in Scotland; and her sister, Carla Jacobsen in Canada.

Donations in her memory can be made to Sisters of the Road.
