Growing up in the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Helen was familiar with the Hering family. On New Year's Eve in 1945 Helen went on her first date with Walter Hering. They were engaged on Valentine's Day and married July 7, 1946. After a honeymoon trip to Canada, they started their life together on the farm purchased on Fern Hill. Helen moved as a bride to her home and remained there until her death. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, on August 12, 1986, after celebrating over forty years of marriage together.

Walter and Helen worked on their farm raising peaches, prunes, walnuts, and other products. In July 1968, Helen went to work for the finance department of Washington County and retired after 20 years of service.

Following her retirement, Helen traveled extensively; she especially loved time at the beach with her family.

Helen and Walter loved to dance, and she continued to dance into her 90s. Hobbies include sewing, quilting, singing, piano playing, flowers and gardening, canning, baking, and crafts. Furthermore, she enjoyed playing games of all types, especially Pinochle. Her family was blessed with beautiful handmade quilts.

Helen was a lifelong and active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Cornelius. She served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 25 years, was an active member of Women of Emanuel and the Emanuel Quilter's Group. Helen was also an active member of the Cornelius Civic Club and the Forest Grove Senior Center.

Helen was also preceded in death by her parents, D.A. and Viola Otto; by her brother, David Otto and her daughter, Carol Jean Hering.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Karl and Darlene Hering, of Tigard, Oregon; Lois and Steve Kakuni, of Honolulu, Hawaii; Ann H. Hering, of Hillsboro, Oregon and Paul D. and Lynn Hering, of Cornelius, Oregon. Also surviving are her 7 grandchildren and her eleven great-grandchildren.

The family suggests contributions be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Helen B. Hering Memorial Fund, PO Box 505, Cornelius, OR 97113, in Helen's memory.
