Jerald Neil Furgurson
Jerry Furgurson was born in Raleigh, NC to Lillie Mae and Louis Furgurson. He had five older siblings; three brothers and two sisters. During his childhood in High Point, NC there were always at least six roomers in the family home, and Jerry said he liked them all. During the war his mother served 20 people two meals every day. As a kid Jerry regularly attended services at four different churches. He was Home Room Chaplain in high school and also worked as a student pastor assistant — one of a dozen different jobs he held during his school years. Jerry moved out West, earned a Bachelor's Degree in history at Fresno State, and then enrolled at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. While in Berkley he met Anne Tucker, a grade school teacher from Monroe, Washington. Anne and Jerry were married in 1957. Jerry's first job as a pastor was at St Luke Lutheran in Spokane, Washington. He served there until 1964 when he moved to Lake Stevens, Washington, not far from Anne's hometown. He led Ebenezer Lutheran for ten years. In 1974 Jerry moved to Trinity Lutheran Church in Gresham, Oregon. Pastor Jerry will be fondly remembered for his spiritual leadership, his tenacity, and his advocacy for the homeless and hungry. Jerry loved to travel and led annual tours to Europe. In 1994 Jerry and Anne retired near Long Beach, Washington where they were active at Ocean Park Lutheran Church. They continued to travel; Train rides across Canada, Cruises to Alaska, family trips to Hawaii, Disneyland, Florida and tours of Costa Rica and Nova Scotia Jerry is survived by his three children; Lesley, John and Mary Linda. He also had six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gresham on April 30th at 1:00.
