Hal Merritt was born on May 14, 1941 in Afton, Wyoming. Hal married Dorothy Jane Ball on September 3, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple. He attended BYU and graduated with an Associate Degree. In June 1968, right after graduation, Hal and Dorothy moved to Hillsboro with their four children, the youngest only nine days old.
When Hal and Dorothy arrived in Oregon, they rented and later bought a home on Quatama Road. With the arrival of two more children, their family outgrew this home, so they bought an acre on Farmington Road and built a home and had property to grow a garden and teach their children to work. They raised five sons and one daughter and after the children were raised Hal and Dorothy moved to the Jackson School neighborhood in Hillsboro, Oregon.
After college, Hal worked in research at Tektronix. He later joined Planar Systems and worked there until his retirement in 2001.
Hal loved to work, serve others, hike, fish and garden. He had many opportunities to serve in the Church, including as Bishop of the Hazeldale Ward. Hal and Dorothy served as missionaries in the Tennessee Nashville Mission from January 2010 to August 2011.
Hal passed away on April 10, 2021, at Rosewood Memory Care in Hillsboro, Oregon due to the effects of dementia. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be missed.
Hal is survived by his wife, Dorothy, their six children and their spouses, 30 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, a brother and a sister. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
