Bernice T. 'Betty' Krieger
Bernice T. "Betty" Krieger, 97, a longtime resident of the Banks community, died peacefully Friday, morning, April 30, 2021 at her home.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 38975 N.W. Harrington Road in Roy, with Fr. Michael Vuky, celebrant. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will precede the Mass at 10:30 A.M. Rite of Christian Burial will follow at the St. Francis Cemetery in Roy.
Bernice Theresa Krieger was born August 10, 1923 in Banks, Oregon, the daughter of the late Arthur Leonard Vuylsteke and Theresa Marie (VanDomelen) Vuylsteke. Betty was born and raised on the Vuylsteke Family Farm. She received her education at Greenville School and St. Francis School in Roy. Betty's father passed away when she was 12 years old and at the age of 15, she went to work at St. Vincent Hospital to help support the family. On April 29, 1943 she was united in marriage to Norbert John "Isky" Krieger at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy. Shortly following their marriage, they purchased the home and property across from the Vuylsteke Family Farm, where they lived celebrating over seventy-three years of marriage and until their deaths. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Isky, on March 24, 2016 in Forest Grove.
Betty was a homemaker, raising 8 children, and worked as a field boss during berry season for other farmers. She also had her own berry field for many years where she sold her berries on the roadside, that her kids fondly called "Betty's Better Berries". Betty was a lifelong active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy, as a member of the altar society and choir. Among her special interests, she enjoyed antiquing, embroidery, quilting, canning and gardening. She enjoyed attending baseball games, her grandchildren's activities, and watching the Portland Trailblazers. Betty and Norbert enjoyed many years at their Seaside beach house with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Theresa Vuylsteke; her two sisters, Rita Vandehey and Erma Delplanche; her two brothers, Chuck Vuylsteke and Cyril "Bud" Vuylsteke; her daughter, Judy Olson and grandson, Kenny Schmidlin.
Survivors include her seven children and their spouses, Karen Schmidlin, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Norbert "Butch" and Minnie Krieger, of Tillamook, Oregon; Ron and Melinda Krieger, of Cornelius, Oregon; Ken and Dorothy Krieger, of Tucson, Arizona; Jane and Dan Wanberg, of Oregon City, Oregon; Mary Lou Vandehey, of Forest Grove, Oregon and Mark and Amy Krieger, of Hillsboro, Oregon.
Also surviving are her twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
