Lowell (Gill) Hayes Gilliland
Lowell (Gill) Hayes Gilliland, 86, of Madras, passed away May 10, 2019, at East Cascade Assisted Living. He was born June 30, 1932, to parents, William Jasper and Fern Leone Diller Gilliland, in Curtis, Nebraska.
He graduated high school from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture and went on to join the Air Force from 1951-1955. Gill then earned a Master of Science in Education degree from Nebraska State Teachers College. He taught four years in Culbertson, Nebraska, and six years in Benkelman, Nebraska, from 1959-1969. Gill taught industrial arts, drafting, and was a coach of football, basketball and track. He then went on to teach at Madras High School from 1969-1991, where he taught shop, drafting, driver's education, and coached sports.
Gill was a proud Elks member for many years, and was treasurer, a part of the Elks trap team, janitor, and he played a large role in starting the Ron DuRette Scholarship fund.
Gill enjoyed hunting, trap shooting and woodworking, loved sports, and working with high school kids, but most of all, he loved fishing with his father.
He was an amazing son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, and mentor to many and will be truly missed.
Gill is survived by his loving wife, Joan Gilliland, whom he married in 1986, and worked with at Madras High School for many years. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Gail Neumann; son, Doyle Gilliland; stepson, David Hotchkiss; stepdaughters, Debra Stoelting, and Pam Thomas; eight granddaughters, three grandsons, two great-grandsons, and two great -great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Doris and Tiny; and his brother, Wayne.
Memorial services will be held from 1-6 p.m., June 9, at the Madras Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Madras Elks Lodge #2017 in Gill's name.
