SUBMITTED PHOTO - Herman Elmer HansenOn Tuesday, July 16, 2019, Herman Elmer Hansen, loving father and friend to many, passed away at the age of 91.

Herman was born on Oct. 20, 1927, in La Junta, Colorado, to Andrew and Mary Hansen (Geiger). He attended school in Southeast Colorado, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and also served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea. He later received a degree in agriculture from Otero College in Colorado.

Herman moved to Madras and drove 18-wheelers for Warm Springs Forest Products and Gourmet Foods. He then worked as a service manager for both the local Chevy and Ford garages in town. Herman began working for the 509-J School District in September 1971, as a bus driver and mechanic. He later took charge of school bus driver training and finally became the Transportation Supervisor for the next 20 years.

Herman officially retired in 1990, but he stayed on with 509-J for a number of years as a bus driver and driver trainer.

In his youth, Herman was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed making and fl ying remote control airplanes, and repairing cars. He enjoyed traveling, especially to the San Juan islands to ride the ferries.

He was a member of Madras First Baptist Church for nearly 60 years as a deacon and choir leader. He continued to help in any capacity he could at the church until his death.

He is survived by his son, Thomas Hansen; and granddaughter, Margaret Aldona Hansen.

All are welcome to attend a celebration of Herman's life on Saturday, August 10, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, 85 NE A St., Madras.
