Joan F. Thomas
Joan was born October 6, 1930, to parents Roy and Josephine Heartt, in Portland, Oregon. She was raised in Portland and graduated from Gresham High School. Joan continued her education at the University of Oregon, where she met and married Pat Thomas, Aug. 30, 1952, in Madras.
The couple and infant son, Mark, moved to Ocean City, New Jersey, where Pat served in the U.S. Air Force until 1957. They relocated back to Madras where Pat operated his family's business, Thomas Sales and Service. Joan had an active role in the dealership working for many years in the accounting office.
Pat and Joan raised their three sons in Madras. Joan was an active member of the local garden club, bridge club, and organized the Red Cross swimming program. She was an avid reader, gardener, and enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and watching U of O Duck athletic events. Joan was an excellent cook and hostess to many regular gatheirngs at her home.
The couple's adventurous spirit took them on numerous worldwide trips and enabled them to spend many summers exploring the San Juan Islands. Retirement years were enjoyed in Kona, Hawaii, where they made many long lasting friendships and cherished the tropical warmth of paradise.
Joan was always a beautiful, strong, and loving woman. Her sparkling blue eyes, gorgeous smile, and easy laugh will be truly missed. Her family considered her a "Saint."
Joan is survived by her sister, Nancy Simons (Dave) of Lynnwood, Washington; sons, Mark (Kathleen) of Albany, Bill and Matt of Bend; grandchildren, Christina, Jennifer, Ryan, Chase, Courtney, John, Jake, Connor and Sophia; great-grandchildren, William and Trenton Griffith, Claire and Emily Zimmerman, and Ash Thomas.
