Joan M. Hobson obituary - born March 26, 1940; passed away on November 24, 2020

COURTESY OF EVERETT HOBSON - Joan M. HobsonWoodstock resident Joan McCabe Hobson died peacefully at her home, a victim of cancer, on November 24, 2020, surrounded by family, pets, and "the love of family and friends across the country".

Joan was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 26, 1940, to Marcella and Charles McCabe. She eagerly started school at the very early age of 2½. She later attended Loyola University, and graduated from the College of St Francis.

While attending Loyola she started a sorority to protest the discriminatory practices of the established sororities.  She lived in the Chicago area, and then Southern California, along the way marrying her husband, Everett. In 1994, when her first grandchild was born, she moved to Portland to be near family. Joan and her husband lived in the Woodstock neighborhood for 25 years.

Joan was a teacher. She had many other jobs – child model, interior designer, real estate agent, manufacturer's representative, and more – but teaching proved to be her true calling. "Joan was an excellent parent and grandparent," recalls Everett; "All of her children and grandchildren are college-educated productive citizens."

She had many gifts. One was making everything fun, from holidays to running the errands she called "roundy rounds." Another was making everyone who knew her feel accepted, valued, and special. Friends report she hosted very gracious and appreciated gatherings of neighborhood women in her living room and on the back patio.  She is survived by her husband, her three children, and eight grandchildren. There will be a private Celebration of Life for family and close friends later, via Zoom. Donations in Joan's memory may be made to "donors' choice or to the "Arbor Day Foundation".
