SUBMITTED PHOTO - Sterling L. FoxSterling L. Fox, former Sherwood City Council member, passed away on August 16, 2019 in Santa Rosa, California after a full life. He was born in Tanakura, Japan to missionary parents, Harry R. and Pauline Fox. Sterling was one of seven children, and being fourth in line, he learned early on to be diplomatic. His family left Japan in 1935 and Sterling graduated from high school in Tennessee.

Sterling began college at Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, but left mid-way to serve in the U.S. Army in post-war Germany. He returned to Pepperdine to complete his studies, and it was there that he met his future bride, Eunice Wells. Sterling and Eunice were married on June 10, 1949, five days after their graduation from Pepperdine. They then took up teaching posts in the desert town of Blythe, CA. This was Sterling' first job in a decades-long career in education. He would later receive his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Southern California and worked as a teacher, principal and district administrator in Glendora, CA before becoming the Superintendent of Schools for the Yorba Linda School District. Sterling was a lifelong learner, and valued education as something that could make an important difference in people' lives.

Throughout his career and retirement years, Sterling consistently served and led the communities in which he lived. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Rotary, served on the Yorba Linda Water Board and as Business Manager at Eastside Christian Church. Sterling held a wide range of leadership roles in the churches he attended, including Sunday school teacher, preacher, elder, song leader and choir member. He came from a family of singers raised in the A cappella tradition of the Church of Christ and was known for his beautiful baritone singing voice.

When Sterling relocated to Sherwood, OR at age 72 after five decades of living in Southern California, he jumped into service at his new home by being elected to the Sherwood City Council for four years.

Sterling was a fair and generous father and grandfather. After more than seventy years of marriage, his love for his wife, Eunice, never waned. It was always clear that he was crazy about her.

Sterling is survived by his wife, Eunice, and children: Nancy Allen (Tom Allen) of El Cerrito, Gary Fox of Portland, OR, Joan Fox (Lloyd McNair) of Cloverdale, and Mark Fox (Angie Wang) of San Francisco. He is survived by his adored grandchildren Emily, Julie, Jessica, Stephen, Holly, Kimberly, Elias, Lukas and Cate, as well as his great-grandchildren Reagan, Marco, Sterling, Ruby, Marigold, and Alice. His brothers Logan Fox, Clinton Fox, and Arnold Fox all survive him, as do his brotherin-law Clifford Wells and sister-in-law Deanna Wells.

He was predeceased by his son, James, his parents, and his siblings Harry Robert Fox, Ramona Hahn, and Jean Stalcup.

Sterling will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his sense of humor, his great laugh, his love of life and his ability to connect with people.
