Albert Alan Casswell passed away on March 22, 2020, from complications related to a stroke.
Bert was born on June 30, 1969, the sixth child of Richard Robert Elliot Casswell and Vivian Ruth (Swopes) Casswell Urie. Only a little over a year later, his dad passed away and at the age of 8, Bert had the blessing of gaining Gilbert Urie as his step-father.
A lifelong resident of Scappoose, Bert was known to many, especially those who frequented P&G Thriftway where he worked stocking shelves, carry out and cashier. He graduated from SHS in 1987. Deciding to make food his life career, he attended The Culinary Institute of Portland, graduating in 1988.
On June 10, 1989, Bert married his high school girlfriend, Patricia Dawn Strobel. Together, they had two children, Nastassia Merril (Casswell) Martyniuk and Richard Maverick McKinnon Casswell.
Bert was known locally for his cooking skills. He started out by running the deli at his step-dad's store, then went on to work as a chef in several restaurants over the years, bringing many of his own recipes to the menus. You could find him cooking at Portland's Delphina's Bakery, The Village Inn, The Rose, and he even took his own hotplate to the Wigwam. Eventually he opened his own café in Scappoose, known as Bert's Kitchen. While he enjoyed cooking a variety of dishes, biscuits and gravy always remained his specialty.
After his marriage ended, Bert eventually met Terrilee Baulbit, who became his life companion. Together they shared Bert's passion for riding motorcycles – specifically poker runs, road trips to the beach or waterfalls, shooting pool, exploring new eateries and weekend adventures with Terrilee's granddaughter. Bert loved being with his family and his five granddaughters held a special place in his heart.
Predeceased by all of his parents, Bert is survived by his companion, Terrilee; his two children, Sasha and Mavrick, five granddaughters, Lily, Raven, Norah, Violet and Terrilee's granddaughter Ashtyn; as well as siblings, Dan Casswell, Carolynn (Casswell) Collie, Gayle (Casswell) James, Beverly (Casswell) George and Gerald Eugene Casswell.
Bert will be remembered for his kindness, compassion for others and his easy laughter. He had a forgiving heart and a ready smile for everyone he met.
Farewell dear Bert, and please have some biscuits and gravy ready when we get there.
