CHRISTOPHER BENDLERemembering the Life of Christopher Bendle

Christopher Bendle was a Scappoose Native, born in 2000 and lived his whole life in our community. He cared about everyone, loved Scappoose, and envisioned living in the area his entire life. Chris was looking forward to being a member of Scappoose High School Alumnae Association. From a young age, Christopher played t-ball, soccer, baseball, basketball and one year of football, but basketball was his first love in sports.

CHRISTOPHER BENDLEChris started his basketball career in Kiwanis, where his Dad Greg was the coach. Moving into junior high, he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. As a sophomore at Scappoose High School, Christopher earned a position on the Varsity baseball team. During his junior and senior years, he played Varsity basketball. In 2017, Christopher played basketball for Roots Sports Academy where he developed his skills under Coach Kyle and Coach "Sully" Sullivan, and all his Roots teammates, launching Christopher into a successful senior year in the sport. During his senior year at Scappoose High School, Christopher earned First Team All League and a position on the North OACA All-Stars. Christopher was second in the Cowapa League in scoring at 23.5 points per game and first in the League on rebounds, averaging 10.5 rebounds per game. In the fall of 2018, Christopher tried out for the Portland Community College Panthers Basketball Team as a 'walk-on' player. Chris was thrilled to hear from Coach Broadous personally, when he called to tell Christopher he had earned a position on the Portland Community College Panthers team. Christopher was known for his hustle and toughness on the court, along with his drive to achieve and win.

Christopher's first job was working at Bamford Bakery in Scappoose, where he learned to enjoy helping customers and visiting with everyone. He then took a job at Fred Meyer, working his way through college, first as a bagger, and later as a Checker, ClickList Shopper and Self Check Out. But what Christopher really enjoyed about his roles at Freddy's was meeting and helping others with their shopping and visiting with all the community members.

One of Christopher's greatest traits was that he loved to help people by listening to their problems and suggesting ideas and solutions, or just offering a sympathetic ear. He enjoyed thinking about others and their issues and giving advice. Everyone loved Christopher's smile and sense of humor.

CHRISTOPHER BENDLEChristopher had a love of hunting, hiking, computer gaming and nature. He also enjoyed ATVing and RVing, but hated his Mom's flock of chickens. Chris especially loved his dogs, Maddie and Daisy, and his pets were always keeping his bed warm for him when he returned home at the end of the day. He loved relaxing and watching Disney movies with his girlfriend Kaylee.

As a college student at PCC, Christopher benefitted from the Oregon Promise Plan where he achieved a place on the honor role. He had a goal of being an electrical engineer after getting his Bachelor's Degree. Christopher opted to become an organ donor, and his parents Lisa and Greg are very proud to know that his corneas and heart valves are helping other families live longer and healthier lives. Lisa and Greg hope to someday meet the organ recipients that benefitted from Christopher's generosity.

Christopher is survived by his loving parents Lisa and Greg, girlfriend Kaylee, Grandpa Chuck, Grandma Lynn, Grandpa John, Grandma Cathy, Aunt Sue, Aunt Sheri, and cousins Josh, Randi, Whittney, Brandon and Anthony. The Bendle Family is deeply touched by the outpouring of support and love from friends, family, neighbors and community through the extremely difficult loss of their son.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider a donation to the Christopher Bendle Basketball Scholarship fund at Wauna Federal Credit Union. This scholarship will benefit basketball athletes in pursuit of their college educations and basketball dreams.

CHRISTOPHER BENDLE"Chris Bendle was a wonderful young man who was loved by his Portland Community College teammates, coaches, teachers and fellow students. He was an extremely hard working athlete who played the game with tremendous confidence. He was such a valuable member of our 2018-19 team because of his hustle and toughness. He worked his way into the rotation because of his solid contributions and work ethic. I truly enjoyed coaching Chris and getting to know him. He had unparalleled confidence in himself that made him a great competitor. He chose to redshirt this past season to practice and improve his game, with the plan to dominate in the upcoming 2020-21 season. He was a truly dedicated student-athlete. Always respectful, friendly and dependable, Chris will never be forgotten."

-PCC head men's basketball coach Tony Broadous

"Chris was an exceptional basketball player but I'll remember him more for the type of person he was off the court. He was humble, kind, and possessed a work ethic that many never achieve in a life time. My thoughts and prayers are with Chris's family."

- Roots Sports Academy Coach Sully Carter
