He was born to John H. Shoemaker and Luella Northrup Shoemaker on Tillamook Street in Portland, Oregon, and later moved with his family to their new home on Thompson Street before moving to Scappoose in 1931.
He attended Fernwood Grade School, Scappoose Grade School and graduated from Scappoose High School in 1940 going on to OSU for one year before returning home to work in his Dad's Family Shoe Factory - West Coast Shoe Company.
He married Jeanne Setvin in 1942. Soon after he was drafted and, was the only one out of 1,500 men to be sent into the Army Air Corp. He went to Atlantic City first and on to Goldsboro, North Carolina where he took his first training and then to Farmington, NY for further training.
He always did so well that he was offered other assignments. His last one being enrollment to Harvard. He refused saying he was not a student. The officer then asked what they could do for him. He said, "send me to the West Coast so I can be near my family." They did and wrote on his papers never to send him overseas.
He came to the West Coast - served on bases in California and Tonopah, NV - eventually to Santa Rosa, CA where he spent the rest of his Army years. He was a Crew Chief on a P38. The Commanding Officer always flew his plane because it was the best maintained.
He was discharged November 1945 and returned home to work in the family business first taking over the Sole Cutting Department for his dad and later President from 1970 retiring in 1998.
