Ruth Jean Prier
Ruth Jean Prier of Tualatin, OR passed away on Monday, January 13, 2020 at the age of 85 after a long struggle with pneumonia following complications from surgery. She was surrounded by family at Meridian Park Hospital.
Ruth was born in Milwaukee, WI where she received a degree and was licensed as a Registered Nurse. Ruth moved to Torrance, CA with her two children, Jim and Kathy, in 1964, where she worked for a couple of years in a medical research lab before she met and married Stan Prier. Ruth and Stan had a son, Kevin, in California just before they moved to Tigard, OR in the Pacific NW in search of the perfect location to raise their family. Once in Oregon, they adopted their daughter, Dawn. Their home was a hub of activity for neighboring children. Ruth expanded on her outreach to children by working for the Title One program at Metzger Elementary School teaching reading skills to children in need. Ruth and Stan especially ook joy in the many opportunities the PNW offered for camping and exploring nature; they started by introducing their children to tent camping and her love of animals, before progressing to the comforts of a camper trailer. As camping became more of a challenge Ruth and Stan moved on to many travel adventures, taking tours to locations around the world including Mexico, Canada, Central America, the UK and much of Europe, and Greece. Ruth delighted in taking hundreds of photos of their travels (her digital camera was a godsend) and insisting in showing every photo to family during visits.
Ruth was always keeping herself active, both personally and within the community, she was a regular at Curves Gym keeping herself fit, and was well known around the neighborhood for daily walks with the Society, the annual Tualatin Crawfish Festival, a long-time wine-tasting group, and for volunteering at the local live theatre. She was especially proud of her long-term volunteer contributions to the Oregon organ donor program — Donate Life Northwest.
Ruth is predeceased by her husband Stan and one grandchild; she is survived by her children James Roberts (Laura Schardein), Kathy Haddock, Kevin Prier (Christina Prier Steffy) and Dawn Swartwout; as well as nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
