Joan Barbara (Brown) Rice, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, joined the Heavenly choir on February 10, 2021. She was born May 14, 1934, to William and Elsie Brown of Meridian, Idaho.
Joan attended public school and was valedictorian of the Meridian High class of 1952. After two years at Boise Junior College, she began teaching. In 1962, Joan received her bachelor's degree from the College of Idaho. Mrs. Rice taught mostly 2nd grade for 42 years teaching over 1000 students in Boise, Hayward, Pocatello, Redmond, and Beaverton. She retired from Rock Creek Elementary in 1996, after 20 years there.
Joan married Phillip Rice August 21, 1955, at Boise Friends Church. Their daughter Christine was born October 1957. Joan and Phil were active with church, the Boise Lions Club, Miss Idaho pageants, and local pageants in Oregon.
Singing was such a part of Joan, having sung in church choir, the Charbonneau Singers, and Just for Fun Singers. She enjoyed Alpha Delta Kappa (her teachers' sorority), and her church, where Bible study and teaching Sunday School was so meaningful to her. Joan traveled on cruises with family, and with her daughter to 5 national music conferences. Shopping, gardening, tutoring, reading, puzzles, game night, and singing were favorite pastimes. Animals were drawn to her and she always had a dog or cat to love.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Earl; and her husband, Phil. She is survived by her sister, Lola Hollis; her daughter, Christine Sinibaldi and son-in- law, John of Salem; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held March 6, 2021, 12 noon, at Tigard Community Friends Church. Contributions may be made to the church. Arrangements are by Young's Funeral Home, Tigard. For more details, visit youngsfuneralhome.org.
