Vernon John Gahler
Vernon John Gahler died in Canby Monday, January 6, 2020 at the age of 96.
He was born to John and Freda Gahler on February 27, 1923 at Needy, Oregon. He attended Needy Grade School and graduated from Canby High School in 1941. He served in WWII in England as an Army Medic. After his discharge he began a lifelong career in excavating. Many North Willamette valley homes have basements as a result of his services. He resided at his rural Molalla farm for nearly 70 years where he raised hogs and various crops.
He married Elizabeth Lee Loop on September 16, 1948 and they had a daughter, Joyce. After Betty's passing, Vernon married Lucille Kauffman King, a childhood friend, in 1991.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wives; his brother, Lester; and sisters, Clara Gingerich, Hilda Reist, and Dorothy Miller.
Vernon is survived by his sister, Bertha Kenagy of Woodburn; daughter, Joyce McVey (Jerry) of Canby; and children by marriage, Wayne King of Depoe Bay; Cindy Garrison of Lincoln City, and Sandy King of Salem.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 19 at 3:00 p.m. at Zion Mennonite Church in Hubbard, Oregon.
