John was born Nov. 9, 1944, in The Dalles to Robert "Bob" and Vera (McRae) McCulloch.
John was a sports enthusiast from a very early age, playing football, basketball and baseball. He played on Mitchell High School's state-bound baseball team at Prineville and Wheeler High School's (Fossil) state tourney basketball team at Bend. He enjoyed rodeo and competed in bull riding while he worked for Howard Johnson in Condon when he was fresh out of high school.

John worked for Steiwer Ranches in Fossil and Kinzua Corporation and Eastern Oregon Logging. John and Nita moved to Prineville when the sawmill at Kinzua closed. John drove log truck for many years before he and Nita moved to Mitchell, where they operated the Blueberry Muffin Café along Highway 26. They moved back to Prineville, where John drove truck again. He was driving for Central Oregon Redi-Mix when he retired. John lived in Prineville more than 40 years.
John enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid golfer, spending many hours on the golf courses around Central Oregon and at Kinzua Hills. He loved to hunt as well. In later years, John watched all sports on TV, especially bull riding.
