Hazel White-Vermillion died peacefully at the exact time she was born, on her 81st birthday in her daughter Holly's home in Gresham, Oregon, after a two-year battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Hazel was raised in Rapid City, South Dakota, and moved to Oregon where her parents, Larry and Rose Morehouse, owned and operated many restaurants and hotels, the last being the Do-Re Café in St. Helens, Oregon. She married Allen White in 1955 and raised their six kids on a "dirt farm" on McKay Creek in Pilot Rock, Oregon. He preceded her in death.
Hazel married John Vermillion in Prineville, Oregon in 1991. He also preceded her in death.
A shy and kind person preferring the back of the room, she came to be a well-known line dance instructor, teaching several hundred students to dance through the Prineville Senior Center. She enjoyed couples dancing, waltzing, and taught dance when she could, after her 80th birthday while on chemotherapy. She stopped only because of Covid restrictions for seniors. She was a member of TOPS. Hazel had a beautiful fenced garden that she loved to spend time in with her cats and, of course, friends and family.
She loved everyone she associated with and was known as a kind, sweet, generous, Godly woman. She enjoyed her time at Powell Butte Christian Church and many others that she would randomly visit with friends to encourage them to attend services. She is survived by her grieving children; Cathy (Posidien), Anna Connor (Gene), Holly Hermens (Bob), Larry White (Jenny), Jack White (Mylene), Joseph Merkwan (Pam) , Lianne McCarthy, and her kitties Simba and Sammy. She had over 50 grand and great-grand children to which she has blessed with a legacy of unconditional love and acceptance.
Donations in Hazel's honor may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 2241 Main St., Prineville, Oregon, 97754, Attn: Clara, for her two great-grandchildren to attend a youth outreach this summer, or to Dayspring Christian Center, 7801 N. 7th St., Terrebonne, Oregon for the orphanage, and of course, Powell Butte Christian Church's Youth group.
A celebration dance party will be held Saturday, February 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Prineville Eagles #2565.
