John was born on Nov. 19, 1952 to Archie Leonard and Glennia Louise (Morris) Halsey in Prineville, Oregon. He grew up in Prineville, graduating from Crook County High School in 1971. He went into the U.S. Army, serving his country from 1971 to 1977. He went on to work in trucking, rock crushing, self-employed motorcycle repair and as a millwright, as he could repair almost anything.

John's hobbies included motorcycle riding and activities and fabrication of parts for the repair of motorcycles, cars and trucks. He enjoyed researching the history and manufacturing of motorcycles and vehicles.

He was a wonderful, accepting and gentle man. He opened his home as a haven to many lost souls, those needing a non-judgmental friend and mentor. He was a loyal friend and family member — loving, quiet, accepting and helpful.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Archie Bernard; brothers-in-law, Andy Bernard and Robert Bernard; nephew, Jeff Halsey; one grand-nephew, Bradley Foster; and precious pets.

John is survived by his brother, Ronald Halsey; sisters, Colleen (John) Ferguson and MaryLou Bernard; nieces, Margaret (Chuck) Bernard-Hedges, Debbie Halsey, Elizabeth (John) Strand; nephews, Mike (Sherry) Bernard, Lee (Sandy) Bernard and Mark (Kat) Ferguson; former wife, Kathleen; step-children, Luke Platz; sisters, Rita, Juanita and Annie; numerous grand-nieces and great-nephews; and many, many dear friends.
