Lyle Lien

Lyle Herbert was born in Huron, South Dakota, the last of nine children, to Andrew and Emma Myhre Lien on October 11, 1932. He was active in sports at Huron High School and on the basketball team which won the league championship in 1950. After graduating in 1950, he attended Huron College for a year until he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Mae Scheidegger on February 3, 1952. They lived in Huron until they followed Lyle's parents to Oregon in 1953. For a time they lived across the street from Trinity Lutheran on 5th and Main in Hillsboro, but as the family kept growing they needed more room, and their six children were mostly brought up in "the big house" on 2nd and Grant. Lyle worked as General Manager for Doherty Motors Ford Dealership in Forest Grove when the children were small and went to night school to become a Certified Public Accountant. With that accomplished, he opened his own office in Portland and ultimately shared office space with Garthe Brown, a prominent Portland attorney, for many years. Trinity Lutheran in Hillsboro was Lyle and Dorothy's church home for more than 50 years and they were active members until Dorothy's stroke in 2010. Lyle served on the Board of Trustees and as congregational President, Vice President, and Treasurer at various times, and was a respected advisor.

Lyle had a love of cars and owned many in his lifetime, from his first Model A to his beloved blue Lincoln Town Car, not forgetting a couple of Mercedes and a 1957 Bentley Rolls along the way. Lyle was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy, and is survived by their children: Diane Gatke (Steven), Craig Lien (Shannon), Brad Lien (Diane Hunegar), Karen Kenyon (Lance), Kristina DeShazo (Jerry), and Eric Lien (Susan Apodaca); 15 grandchildren: Karl Gatke (Jennifer), Brandon Gatke (Jessica), Derek Benson (Denise), Dylan Benson (Anya), Emma Martinez (Jose), Connor Lien, Bradian Meeuwsen (Micah), Cameron Lien, Grace Lien (Jake), Reed Kenyon (Janine), Alex Kenyon, Ben DeShazo, Brittany DeShazo, Ryan Lien (Megan) and Max Lien; and 15 great-grandchildren: Madeline Gatke, Hayden Gatke, Miriam Gatke, Cason Benson, Cruz Benson, Cohen Benson, Charlie Benson, Malachi Benson, Marshall Benson, Elijah Meeuwsen, Jonah Meeuwsen, Sanjay Lien, Sofie Kenyon, Emmett Kenyon, and Oscar Lien. Lyle's memorial service will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2194 SE Minter Bridge Road in Hillsboro at 1 p.m. on August 31, Pastor Bruce Rumsch presiding. Interment of ashes will be in the Trinity Memorial Garden. Donation in memory of Lyle may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Crossroads-Sanctuary Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Springer & Son Aloha Funeral Home.
