From the season's tenuous nature to its late start to its shortened six-week duration, everything about 2021 was fast, uncertain and challenging.

And while 2021 did not end with traditional OSAA-sanctioned state tournaments, there was some great competition in the season's last week, that thanks to the four culminating week brackets that brought together 32 of the state's best Class 5A and 6A teams.

2021 Boys Basketball


Overall record: 15-2

League record: 13-0 (1st)

Coach: Cameron Mitchell

Seniors: Ryan Lewis, Izzy Baker, K.J. Horsley, Damon Erickson, Jack Dorn

Synopsis: The Cavaliers made 2021 a year to remember, sweeping to the Mt. Hood Conference title with a perfect 13-0 record, then winning two of their three games in the Blue bracket of the culminating week tournaments. Clackamas' lone setback in culminating week was its 67-62 loss to powerful Jefferson in the Blue bracket championship game on Thursday, June 24. The Cavs beat Cleveland (58-50) and Jesuit (65-62 in overtime) in their other Blue bracket games.

Lake Oswego

Overall record: 8-8

League record: 6-4 (3rd)

Coach: Marshall Cho

Seniors: Grayden Smith, Jack Woolf, Trace Salton, Ryan Hooper, Josef Hoffman

Synopsis: The Lakers started slowly in 2021, losing five of their first six games, then began to hit their stride. Lake Oswego ripped off six straight wins in 17 days — five of those in Three Rivers League play. The Lakers finished their year with three games in the Red bracket of the culminating week tournaments, beating Roosevelt while falling to Sherwood and Gresham.

La Salle

Overall record: 9-5

League record: 6-3 (2nd)

Coach: Sean Kelly

Seniors: Ian Simmons, Benjamin Jacobson, Andrew Keepes, Nicolas Boyd, Robert Collman, Jacob Owens

Synopsis: The Falcons started their 2021 season on an absolute roll, winning seven of the first eight games they played in the Northwest Oregon Conference, the only loss in that stretch a last-second 47-46 defeat to NWOC champion Wilsonville. La Salle then tested itself against the best down the stretch, falling to Jefferson (77-64) and Barlow (63-57) in the Blue bracket of the culminating week tournaments, then ending its year with a 55-50 win over Cleveland.


Overall record: 6-8

League record: 5-2 (3rd)

Coach: Don Law

Seniors: Hector Penaloza, Curtis Lee, Aidan Storm, Jalen Mey

Synopsis: The Milwaukie boys basketball team rode the roller coaster in 2021, never winning more than two games in a row but only losing more than two in a row once while fighting its way to third place in the tough-as-nails Northwest Oregon Conference. The Mustangs then finished their year in the Green bracket of the culminating week tournaments, winning their opener against Canby while falling to both Ida B. Wells and David Douglas.

Oregon City

Overall record: 7-6

League record: 2-4 (6th)

Coach: Aaron Newkirk

Seniors: Jeffrey Judd, Alex Newkirk, Dominic Loeb, Zach Winkel, Gibsen Payne, David Eells

Synopsis: To say the least, the 2021 season threw some curves at the Oregon City boys basketball team. The Pioneers lost four games from their short-season schedule due to a COVID-19 outbreak, but came back to win four of their next six contests. OC then finished its year in the Black bracket of the culminating week tournaments, including wins over Madison (63-54) and Franklin (72-52) in its last two games.


Overall record: 15-2

League record: 9-0 (1st)

Coach: Chris Roche

Seniors: Rowan Bush, Riley Scanlan, Cason Dougall, Hayden Nichols

Synopsis: The Wildcats just about did it all in 2021, winning their first 14 games, winning the Northwest Oregon Conference and extending their five-year NWOC winning streak to 76 games. Wilsonville then finished its year in the Green bracket of the culminating week tournaments, falling to David Douglas (49-44), beating Forest Grove (48-25) and losing to Canby (51-48).
