This year's event raises money to help a young Oregon City girl fight bone cancer.

And golf. Nelson, who passed away in 2009, really loved golf, too.

In his memory, Nelson's longtime friends Kerry Belle Isle, Josh Lunceford and Ken Rommel have continued to host the Mike Nelson Memorial Golf Tournament. After holding a scaled-back version of the event in 2020, the 12th annual tournament was held this year at the Mt. Hood Oregon Resort on June 19.

The tournament previously raised money to support the Lunch Buddy Program that Nelson started in the North Clackamas School District, but shifted gear this year since so many area schools had been relegated to distance learning or hybrid models.

Instead, this year's event — which featured 152 participants including a handful of sports celebrities — raised more than $10,000 to support an Oregon City 6-year-old named Charlotte Gehrke as she continues her fight against a rare form of bone cancer.

Support Charlotte Gehrke

CHARLOTTE GEHRKEThe 2021 Mike Nelson Memorial Golf Tournament raised funds to support to support Charlotte Gehrke, who was diagnosed with a bone cancer called adrenocortical carcinoma.

Besides her challenges with cancer, Charlotte also lost her father, Tom Gehrke, at the age of 40 in 2018. Since then, her mother, Evelyn Gehrke, has needed to stay home with Charlotte and her three siblings (who have all shaved their heads to "be like Charlotte").

The 2021 Mike Nelson Memorial Golf Tournament received corporate sponsorship this year from Team Worldwide PDX branch owner Marty Coomler after Rommel, a Team Worldwide PDX employee, brought it to Coomler's attention.

Among the local sports celebrities who participated in this year's tournament were former New York Mets pitcher Tom Gorman, former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Mike Walter and former Portland TrailBlazers forward Bob Gross.
