Gettysburg Address draws crowd to Oregon City
Oregon City hosted a crowd for a recitation of the Gettysburg Address last weekend at Mountain View Cemetery.
Capt. Steve Betschart, leader of the local chapter of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War sponsoring the free Remembrance Day event, said the group had once of its largest audiences yet.
The event featured a reading of the Gettysburg Address by the best President Lincoln actor in American, according to a member of the National Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. George Vogt, former executive director of the Oregon Historical Society, called Stephen Holgate the "most convincing presidential impersonator" he had seen.
Over 100 Civil War veterans are buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Oregon City, and eight previously unmarked graves of veterans there recently received headstones. The headstones were dedicated with military honors and a musket salute during the Nov. 16 ceremony.
