$23.8 million urban renewal project to begin at Sunnyside Road's I-205 bridge

After two years of planning and designing, Clackamas County is set to begin construction in January on widening an Interstate 205 overpass in the Clackamas Regional Center area.

I-205 overpass work at Sunnyside Road is part of a series of projects designed to improve safety and traffic flow for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and transit riders on the following major roadways:

1. Sunnyside Road between Southeast 82nd Avenue and Stevens Road

2. Harmony Road between Southeast 80th Avenue and Fuller Road

3. Southeast 93rd and 97th avenue intersections with Sunnybrook Boulevard

New sidewalks and bike lanes will be constructed, along with restriped roadways, new traffic signals, I-205 bridge widening, ADA ramps, landscaped medians and new stormwater facilities.

The first major area under construction will be near the Sunnyside Road/I-205 interchange to prepare for widening the I-205 bridge overcrossing in an effort to improve traffic flow for motorists. The bridge also will be modified and widened to provide wider travel areas for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Clackamas County awarded Kerr Contractors the $23.8 million project, which is funded solely through tax increment financing from the Clackamas Town Center Urban Renewal District. Construction for the entire project is expected to last approximately two years, through December 2021.

During construction, the public can expect:

1. Road closures are set to begin 9 a.m. Jan. 10: 80th Avenue will close for road rebuilding between Harmony Road and Southgate Street, through September. 84th Avenue will be closed for regional construction equipment staging through August 2021 between Sunnybrook Boulevard and Sunnyside Road.

2. All major roadways will remain open (Sunnyside Road, Harmony Road, I-205 and 82nd Avenue), though there will be limited lane closures at times to accommodate work in the roadway.

3. All work affecting traffic near the Sunnyside Road/I-205 interchange will be completed at night.

4. Temporary routes for pedestrians and cyclists will be provided.

5. Access to residential properties and local businesses will be maintained throughout construction.
