TCC retail locations around the nation, including Molalla, Oregon City and Silverton, will give away 140,000 supplies-filled backpacks this weekend.

For the eighth year in a row, Verizon retailer TCC is swooping in with a solution — the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Between 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 26, TCC is inviting local families to visit a nearby store to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more. Plus, five students will have the opportunity to each win a $10,000 college scholarship. Register during the backpack event or any time between July 24 to 31.

The retailer has participating stores in Molalla at 1585 W. Main St. Suite A, Oregon City at 2050 Beaver Creek Road Suite 105, and Silverton at 701 McClaine Street B. Each store is donating up to 180 backpacks in a variety of color options.

"Absolutely no purchase necessary. Free backpacks," Ryan Tierney of the Molalla store previously told the Herald-Pioneer. "All you have to do is bring a child down. If you bring two children down, we'll give you two backpacks…Again, no purchase required. It's just us giving back to the community."

The rules are: one backpack per child and first come, first served. "Nothing qualifies or disqualifies you," Tierney said. "You just come on down."

The stores will be following social distancing and state guidelines to ensure the safety of employees and attendees. So, to limit the number of people at the event, children are not required to be present to receive the backpack.

Continuing to do good

Molalla's TCC holds a charitable initiative like this four times a year through its Culture of Good movement, but for Tierney, the backpack giveaway is the favorite.

"I love the smile on the kids' faces," Tierney said. "A lot of these kids don't have the ability to get backpacks, and/or they don't get new clothes if they get backpacks kind-of-a-thing. So it's really cool to see us being able to give backpacks to children and then they can get the clothes that they need or want, or it frees up the money for the parents to buy them whatever."

Families with school-aged children expect to spend an average of $789.49 each on school supplies in 2020, according to the National Retail Federation. With more than one out of every five school-aged children in the U.S. living below the federal poverty threshold, TCC is working to alleviate the rising costs of school supplies through this annual program.

"We love helping students obtain essential supplies before they begin their school year each summer," said Scott Moorehead, chief executive officer of Round Room, parent company of TCC and Wireless Zone. "To have been able to donate more than 1 million backpacks to our nation's youth in the eight years of this event is incredible, and I couldn't be more thankful for our store locations, employees and customers for helping us continue to do good in our operating communities."

The three area stores are among more than 800 TCC and Wireless Zone stores participating in the event. Round Room will donate 140,000 backpacks this year alone.
