Oregon City hopes to sell police building to vector control
Oregon City is hoping to sell its old police station to the Clackamas County Vector Control District for $2.8 million.
City commissioners on Sept. 16 unanimously approved the proposed sale with a due-diligence period through Dec. 15.
Oregon City has had a long road when it comes to its police buildings. City officials headed back to a broker to sell an old police station after a proposed deal with F&F Structures fell apart during the July 15 meeting of City Commission. F&F Structures had offered to help the city find a buyer, but city commissioners didn't want F&F to flip the property.
In light of 11th-hour comments from F&F about its previous work with Vector Control, Oregon City Attorney Carrie Richter recommended that city commissioners approve the contract on Sept. 16 without a provision that could hold the city liable.
"Vector represents that they don't have a broker, and that's where the beef is between F&F and Vector," Richter said. "We don't want to have provisions that could be used to drag us into something."
City commissioners would have asked for more than $5,000 in earnest money from Vector Control if Oregon City Manager Tony Konkol hadn't said that public agencies with verifiable amounts of cash on hand aren't generally held to larger amounts of earnest money.
Although the city expects to complete its new police station by Dec. 15, it will not necessarily need to sell the old station to fund the project. Oregon City could fully fund its new police building project by borrowing from other departments if the sale isn't soon finalized for the old building. Construction on the new building, which will house the police department and municipal court at the former Mt. Pleasant Elementary School site, is being completed by the end of this year.
OCPD's current building was purchased by the city in the 1980s as a temporary civic space. The 1960s-era building and its 1.73 acres of property on Warner Milne Road has a market value around $2.68 million, according to the county assessor's office.
