Canby nonprofit, Rivers of Life Center, hosts half-mile bluff tour overlooking Willamette Falls in Oregon City

An area nonprofit is offering a unique opportunity for individuals and families on Thanksgiving Day weekend.

Rivers of Life Center, a nonprofit located in Canby, is hosting a half-mile bluff tour overlooking Willamette Falls in Oregon City from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 28.

To tell the stories of the unique geography, geology and settlement of the area, youth presenters will join living history actors playing the parts of Oregon City founder Dr. John McLoughlin and Linn City founder Robert Moore.

The presenters will discuss the role Willamette Falls played in channeling ice age floods to create the Willamette gorge and Canby to the south.

"This area is one of the best viewpoints to see the dynamics of incredible ice age floods that sculpted Oregon City, West Linn, Willamette Falls and the Valley south to nearly Eugene," said program leader Jerry Herrmann.

Experts from the area also will discuss Willamette Falls as a gathering point for Native people and as a hub for industry and commerce.

Participants will have a chance to view emerging wildflower plantings that have been put in place by Rivers of Life Center youth and funded with the help of Oregon City's Metro Enhancement Grant program.

The group's last walking tour at Clackamette Park was a big success, according to Herrmann. For the bluff tour, participants will meet at the upper turret of Oregon City's Municipal Elevator.
