Rita Mills, Oregon City resident: Congregations in many churches still have full family attendance, but several denominations have more senior attendees than any other age group

Absences — in schools, places of employment and court hearings — but also in some churches.

Rita MillsYoung people are not in attendance at many churches. The generation of children who joined their families in church services are now parents and grandparents. Their family might be with them, but to many, a soccer game or other sport is where their children can be found, even on Sunday mornings! This is not to evangelize. I just want to catch your thoughts and attention.

Congregations in many churches still have full family attendance, but several denominations have more senior attendees than any other age group.

I am a member of our community's very treasured historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church. We meet visitors and newcomers with a friendly greeting, a good hot cup of coffee or tea and a variety of "to go withs." And with the invitation and hope that they and their family will wish to join our congregation to worship with us.

I would like to have you remember how many times you have spoken, "thank God." He is there and hears you, but it would be nice if you were raised in the Methodist Church, try visiting it again. A Presbyterian....go get reacquainted with those who are still in attendance. Three Lutheran churches have their place of worship in Oregon City. Of course, you Episcopalians are invited to return to worship and say, "thank you, Lord." There are the Baptists, the Christian Church, a new Slavic place of worship and many other denominations located in our community.

One day soon, I urge your family to set aside your Sunday's morning time to greet old friends and be a worshiper at your church of choice.
