Rachel Lyles Smith: Recognize efforts of Shawn Dachtler, Brandi Johnson, Jerry Herrmann

Extra Mile Day is a nationwide declaration by cities across the United States that are recognizing the impact of special people in their community who are "going the extra mile" in volunteerism and service.

This year, Oregon City will celebrate Extra Mile Day on Nov. 1. Oregon City is participating with other cities by recognizing three individuals and/or organizations who are making a difference and creating positive change in our community.

As mayor, I have the pleasure of selecting individuals and/or organizations that have made a positive impact in our community over the past year and continue to support our city by giving their time, talent and effort. I'm happy to honor them and/or their respective organizations on Extra Mile Day.COURTESY PHOTO: CITY OF OC - From left, Oregon City Commissioner Adam Marl celebrates Extra Mile Day with Jerry Herrmann, Mayor Rachel Lyles Smith, Shawn Dachtler and Commissioner Denyse McGriff.

Shawn Dachtler

Beginning in 2003, Shawn Dachtler has given many hours of service to our Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. He has served on this committee for many years and has contributed to the construction of Wesley Lynn Park, Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Park and many more park improvements. He has represented neighborhoods with little to no voice and worked to emphasize that all neighborhoods in Oregon City should have a park nearby to visit.

Dachtler is moving on to other nonprofit work, but his many hours supporting PRAC have not gone unnoticed.

Brandi Johnson/LoveOne

LoveOne is a nonprofit serving Oregon City by providing laundry services, showers, meals, personal care resources and community connections to individuals in need.

Brandi Johnson, the director of LoveOne, organizes volunteers, creates service

programs in Oregon City, Milwaukie and Molalla, and advocates for low-income and homeless individuals who need assistance.

Love for others is the foundation of LoveOne, and Johnson's efforts carry the organization's mission with great success. We need more individuals in our community to lead with love, and we appreciate Johnson's tireless efforts to help our neighbors.

Jerry Herrmann/Rivers of Life

Rivers of Life, a nonprofit training and education organization for at-risk youth and young adults, specializes in environmental landscaping and natural resources preservation.

Jerry Herrmann leads the work of the Rivers of Life Center in Oregon City and has worked tirelessly to preserve wetlands and natural areas in our community. He has a heart for the youth in our community and spends many hours mentoring them, to set them on a path to a successful career in environmental studies.

Herrmann has led many projects within Oregon City and continues to support our youth year after year.

Consider giving back

Oregon City is lucky to have these individuals and organizations volunteering their time and services. They have made a long-lasting positive impact in our community.

Please join me in recognizing these individuals and organizations on Extra Mile Day, and consider how you can give back and "go the extra mile" in Oregon City!
