Tucked behind a plumbing company, everything in Oregon City store is designed by artist Becky Dawson

Mass-produced Christmas merchandise has been on shelves since before Halloween, but don't expect to see that kind of thing in One Lane Road Gallery & Gift Shop, located at 13801 Forsythe Road in Oregon City.COURTESY PHOTO: BECKY DAWSON - Becky Dawson stands in front of One Lane Road Gallery & Gift Shop's 'secret' location in Oregon City.

Everything in this colorful little shop is designed by owner Becky Dawson and produced in a small batch from locally sourced materials. She also sells jewelry that she designed and collaborated on with a jewelry maker.

"I playfully call One Lane Road Gallery & Gift Shop a secret gallery behind a plumbing shop, because it's located on a one-lane road in an industrial garage behind my friend's plumbing shop," Dawson said.

Her home studio, where she paints, draws and sculpts, is also located on a one-lane road in rural Clackamas County, she added.

In addition to the Oregon City gallery and shop, One Lane Road products can be found online at and are locally available at Powell's Books, New Seasons, Made In Oregon and other small independent retail shops and bookstores.

Holiday season

Normally, the gallery and gift shop is only open two days a month, but with Christmas season looming, Dawson decided to extend hours.

"I'm also inviting guest vendors in each weekend that I'm open from Thanksgiving to Christmas," she said. See sidebar for dates, times and guest vendors.

For those shopping early, One Lane Road will be open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20.

Dawson said the shop is chock-a-block with items perfect to give for the holiday season, including tea towels, totebags, holiday greeting cards and homemade ceramic Christmas ornaments.

Pillows, stickers, candles and jewelry will also be available.

Sometimes when people come into the shop, they don't understand the concept, Dawson said, but once they realize that she's the artist and she makes a lot of different things, they get it.

A dream come true

Dawson has been selling her art since 2011, when she started the business with a small Etsy shop online.

"That has evolved over the years, so now I also sell my products through retail shops," she said.

But she has developed so many products that she began to dream about having a place to permanently display her work. She also realized that having her own retail outlet would be a commitment to be open every day, and that was something she did not want.

So, when the garage storage space behind her friend's shop became available, "I thought, what if I make a sector of that a gift shop and I invite people in a couple of times a month."

Her vision was to "make this an immersive experience where people have art all around them," Dawson said.

One Lane Road Gallery & Gift Shop opened in June and the reaction from the community has been better than she expected.

Dawson also experimented with having a pop-up market in the shop's parking lot last August with guest artists and music. That event was so popular that she is considering having another one in the summer of 2023.

Future plans

Looking to the future, Dawson said she would love for the gallery and shop to continue being a place for her to showcase her ever-evolving art, products and creativity for years to come.

"And to offer my local community a unique and fun experience to visit and shop," she added.

She noted that she likes being open two weekends a month, so she has time to not only run the other parts of her business, but to have time to play around and experiment with new original art. "I'm also a mom with two school-age kids, and so far the community has really welcomed that I'm only open limited hours, which is so unexpected and nice," Dawson said.

"I think it adds to the 'secret' charm that you either have to see my sandwich boards I put out when the shop is open, hear about it online or through word of mouth," she said.

Dawson said she is excited to see how the shop grows and evolves as more people find out about it.

Although the gallery only carries in-house designs, Dawson said she loves meeting and connecting with other artists and local small businesses.

She added, "In the future I'd like to create more ways to support other artists/makers, by occasionally highlighting and inviting a guest vendor inside the weekends that I'm open. I've done this a couple of times already, and it's been super fun."
