Let the games begin! The XXIII Olympic Winter Games are underway in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Many of us enjoy watching the sportsmanship and athleticism of the athletes in competition. The Olympic Games originally started in Greece in 776 BC and were an important celebration in Greek life.
Numerous changes have occurred to the Olympic Games throughout the years, including the birth of the International Olympic Committee in 1894, which ushered the Olympic Games into the modern age. Baron Pierre de Coubertin of the IOC, created the motto "Faster, Higher, Stronger" as well as the iconic Olympic rings flag as a symbol for the games.
The five interlocking rings represent continuity and human existence while the colors of the rings-blue, yellow, black, green and red, signify the flags of participating nations in the Olympic Games. The international emblem first debuted at the VII Games of the Olympiad in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920. Since then, the Olympic Flag has become a recognizable symbol of the games, throughout the world.
"The Olympic symbol expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games."Olympic Charter, Rule 8
