Memorial Day is more than just sidewalk sales and the three-day weekend that kicks off Summer. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is intended as a tribute for the soldiers of the armed forces who lost their lives defending America.
Now observed on the last Monday in May (this year, May 28th), Memorial Day originated during the Civil War when flowers were placed on the graves of the fallen soldiers who fought to preserve the Union. By 1865, the federal government began creating national military cemeteries to recognize the Union war dead and a day of remembrance was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Today, observation of this national day of mourning includes raising the U.S. flag to full height in the morning and then promptly lowering it to half-mast. At noon the flag should then be raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.
Moreover, volunteers decorate national cemeteries by placing small American flags on the graves of servicemen and servicewomen. At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, Americans are asked to pause for "a moment of contemplative silence" to honor our soldiers.
At Elmer's Flag and Banner, we thank all veterans and current members of the armed services by offering a Military discount every day. We also stock all of the flags of the armed forces to recognize the different branches of service and -yes- we also sell small U.S. stick flags for decorating military graves on Memorial Day.
All of us at Elmer's Flag and Banner wish all of our customers a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day!
