One of the first things I hear people say when I tell them I am a Financial Planner is "I will come see you when I have some money." The truth is you should come see me before you have money in the bank. If you are fresh out of college & starting your career, building a business, a few years into working or starting anything that effects your financial life, you should seek a Financial Planner.
How do you go about finding the right advisor for you? I recommend starting with a search in your local area for Certified Financial Planners (Industry Certification), looking at advisor minimums, making a list of questions and interviewing 3 advisors. Yes, I said 3. You need to feel comfortable with the advisor you choose, it needs to be someone you feel you can trust and who is taking the time to get to know you. Finally, you should like them. You are going to be sharing the most intimate details of your Financial life with a stranger! If you don't like them, will you ever feel comfortable enough to open up to them?
Lastly, do not feel intimidated. This is a step in the BEST direction for your financial life. I became a Financial Planner because I wanted to help people make informed financial decisions that positively change the course of their lives. You deserve that right, invest in yourself and go find your "person."
