Those might be fighting words for some, but college football in Oregon has a long history of good-natured rivalry. This year's match-up will be at Autzen Stadium November 30.
Originally called the "Oregon Classic", the Civil War between Oregon State and Oregon started in 1894. Though a few years saw double games and some years had none (A cancellation of the 1911 game was due to riots after the 1910 game), this year will be the 123rd meeting between these two schools. The Civil War series boasts the highest number of games played between two public universities and the series currently favors Oregon 65-47-10.
Have you heard of the Platypus Award? It was given to the winner in the years 1959 through 1961 but then was lost until 2005. Today, it's given to the winning school's alumni association.
One memorable game was the record-setting double overtime of 1998 when excited Beaver fans rushed the field after the first overtime, only to be moved off to finish the game. And the 2008 match where an OSU win would have secured a Rose Bowl berth (the first in 44 years) but Oregon prevailed 65-38 in a game that set records for most points scored by a team. That record was broken in 2017 when Oregon scored 69 points against the Beavers.
