Due to the COVID-19 outbreak we will run the 5000 Kelvin story next month. This month we will explain the use of Germicidal lamps. I am getting calls every day asking about the UV light that kills germs. The Germicidal clear fluorescent lamp will kill germs when used correctly. The germicidal lamp is also used in water purification systems and air purifications systems for home, industrial, and medical use. Each application requires special equipment to work correctly and to protect those who use them. There are dead-man switches to turn the germicidal off.  We do stock the lamps for installed home equipment.

There are companies who sell wands and special equipment to kill surface germs. Like installed air and water systems, these units must be very close to the surface, water, or air that is being sanitized.  When used incorrectly germicidal lamps can damage the rods in your eyes and give you a sunburn, damaging your skin.

The best way to protect yourself and your family is to wash your hands correctly and often. Wash up after coughing, sneezing, or caring for others. Keep your hands away from your face. Wash your hands and clean all prep and serving surfaces with a disinfectant. Bleach water and other cleaners can leave your surfaces clean and sanitary. Then have everyone wash up before eating.

Luckily most people wash up when their hands look or feel dirty and after using the toilet, be sure your children do, too. Wash up after petting any animal or cleaning up their waste.  Change wash and dry cloths often.
