Right now, there is a dog or cat who needs a blood transfusion. That's right — animals need blood just like humans do in an emergency. Whether to recover from surgery, toxicity, or trauma, dogs and cats at DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital and around the country get help from the DoveLewis Blood Bank.
But due to overwhelming demand at DoveLewis and local area clinics, the DoveLewis Blood Bank is in critical need of canine blood donor volunteers. DoveLewis currently has 110 regular canine donors but at least 20 more volunteers are needed to replenish the supply and meet the current demand.
"Our supply is running low for a variety of reasons: the number of patients that needed transfusions at DoveLewis increased by 25% in the last year, several of our longtime donors have recently retired, and local as well as national clinics are requesting any blood products that we can provide." says Blood Bank Coordinator Kelsey Reinauer, CVT.
Canine blood donors must meet a few basic requirements, including:
- 1-6 years old
-Healthy and current on vaccines
"Our blood donors are called Superheroes because they are truly saving lives. One donation can help treat up to four animals." says Kelsey. The donation process is quick and easy. DoveLewis asks donors to commit to giving blood four to six times a year for at least two years. Donors also receive a variety of benefits for volunteering. Interested in learning more?
