Regarding your Oct. 22 article about granny flat builders getting dinged by Multnomah County on their taxes, I am writing because I find the term "granny flat" to be derogatory, and it promotes an ageist attitude.

I am sure your writers are careful about not loosely using terms that have racist or sexist connotations. Please be sensitive to those terms that promote ageist attitudes.

Council should follow Hales' lead

The best thing Charlie Hales has done for the city as part of his current reign as mayor was to announce he isn't running for re-election. And if he really wants to do some good during the remainder of his term, he will follow through with all the issues he and the rest of the City Council have been pontificating about lately, namely the homeless problems, affordable housing, street maintenance, police, home demolitions, tree removals, transportation safety, etc., etc., etc.

It is outrageous that it has taken myriad public complaints and the election promises of mayoral contender Ted Wheeler to force this council to take action on problems it has either created or ignored.

The real emergency facing the city right now is this mayor and City Council, and Hales is doing the right thing to step aside. The rest of the council should follow his lead.
