Letters: Former DA did belong to organization
I write regarding your article of Nov. 5 regarding a forum where candidates for Multnomah County district attorney expressed their views. I noted that one of the candidates, Mike Schmidt, asserted that longtime retired district attorney Mike Schrunk was not a member of the Oregon District Attorneys Association.
This statement is untrue. Schrunk was a member of the Oregon District Attorneys Association for many years. Moreover, he served for a time as its president and on its executive committee. I was Schrunk's chief deputy for almost 30 years. In addition to his service with the ODAA, up to the year of his retirement, he regularly assigned me to work on its legislative committee in part to show his commitment to the organization.
This is not to say that Schrunk did not frequently have differences of opinion with others in the ODAA, but he knew the significance of having his views heard in that important statewide organization.
Voters will have to decide whether the extent of Schmidt's knowledge and judgment on this issue coupled with his limited experience as a prosecutor merit his election to such an important post.
