My view: Read is best candidate for governor of Oregon
Former Oregon Govs. Barbara Roberts and John Kitzhaber, and other Democratic politicians, are supporting the only candidate with legislative, executive and U.S. Treasury experience, Tobias Read, for governor.
The Yamhill County's News-Register favors Read over Tina Kotek (note: the other Democratic frontrunner) noting: "We see him as a moderate, thoughtful and likable consensus -builder. ... Both have performed capably under fire, and at high levels. But he seems better at smoothing troubled waters, she at stirring them to new heights. And in these troubled times, we place more value in smoothing..."
I will quote from three individuals regarding leadership:
" A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus — Martin Luther King Jr.
The Oregon Capital Insider noted, "The State Land Board — which consists of the governor, secretary of state and state treasurer —approved the sale of the 91,000-acre Elliott Forest in February 2017. But Treasurer Tobias Read, who had been in office only a few weeks, proposed the following month that the board consider an alternative that would keep the forest in public ownership."
"We are all faced with a series of opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations." — Chuck Swindoll, evangelist.
The Treasury, by administering general funds to agencies like the State Homeless Assistance Program, helped meet the emergency needs of homeless Oregonians by providing operational support for emergency shelters and supportive services to shelter residents. More urgently needs to be done!
The Treasury, through the Oregon Housing and Community Services, utilizes funds from tax-exempt bonds to assist first-time low- and moderate-income homebuyers in securing below-market interest rates on home loans.
"Always drink upstream from the herd." — Reportedly stated by political satirist Will Rogers.
The herd was the Portland Teacher's Union and its President Elizabeth Theil, who according to Willamette Week, recommended in late 2021 cutting in-class instruction. Tobias Read, a father of two, publicly opposed this proposal, recommending exploring safe ways to expand in-person learning to address learning gaps in children.
As we enter an economic recession and inflation, Tobias Read is the only candidate with financial experience and executive leadership vying to be Oregon's Democratic gubernatorial nominee.
Carl Anderson is a retired physician, and a Democrat, recently changed from non-partisan. He lives in the Damascus area of east Happy Valley.
