Mark Meek: Who do you want to serve as your next state senator?
Are you looking for a leader who will listen to your concerns and make the tough decisions on your behalf — as well as go out and fight for you and your family?
Or are you willing to be led by a candidate who is so desperate that they are using the most despicable and deceitful tactics available to mislead voters by disparaging and distorting my record?
Senate District 20 voters: Let me set the record straight on some of the most meaningful legislation I've helped pass without my opponent's participation or support.
First, protecting renters: The landmark passage of SB 608 led to the strongest renter protections in the nation ever to be passed. No state in the union has ever tackled or addressed these disparities on a statewide basis before. We eliminated "no-cause" evictions and protected renters from being put out onto the street due to egregious rent increases. Before the passage of SB 608, a landlord could increase your rent as much as they wanted and as often as they wanted. Some tenants experienced 100% or higher increases in their rent prior to SB 608. I alienated all of my real estate and property management supporters in order to protect the seniors and working families across our community. I would do it all again.
Second, the Student Success Act: It has always been my belief that the best investment our state can make is in the future of our families through a strong and quality education. With the passage of the Student Success Act of 2019, which I proudly voted for, Oregon has begun investing an additional 1 billion dollars per year to Oregon schools statewide. These investments provide opportunities to improve access to career technical training, counseling, student mental health, and early childhood development. Bill Kennemer has campaigned on repealing the Student Success Act, which would mean big cuts to our schools. As our students are reeling from a pandemic-induced setback, now is not the time to disinvest in our families and Oregon's future.
Lastly, my record on public service and safety: Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and in their community, period. I come from a family who has proudly served in our US Armed Forces, from my father serving two terms in Vietnam as a US Marine to my nephew serving in Iraq in the US Army. I enlisted into the US Air Force at the age of 18 and quickly learned what the true price of freedom was.
I trained as a security policeman, excelling at keeping our base and nuclear arsenal safe and protecting our nation.
That's why, in the Legislature, I have supported increasing funding for state police in every legislative session. I've also supported legislation that is saving lives by keeping guns out of the hands of stalkers and domestic abusers. In the State Senate, I will fight to hire more officers to protect victims and hold criminals accountable, increase the safety of our communities, and reduce the amount of time it takes to respond to emergencies.
My military service is also why I have always supported our veterans. In my capacity as vice-chair of the House Veterans and Emergency Management Committee, I have advocated for increased funding for mental health care for our veterans suffering from PTSD and new investments to hire more county Veteran Service officers.
Most important of all distinctions between myself and my opponent is my commitment to you. I have always served my community with honesty and dedication, and I commit that if I am elected, I will faithfully execute this office with all my heart, energy, intelligence and integrity to give you the representation you deserve in Senate District 20.
