The Oregon Historical Society, 1200 S.W. Park Ave., will commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when the allies stormed Normandy, France, to start the quest to take back Europe from the Nazis. Two World War II veterans who participated in D-Day, Ben Asquith and Abe Laurenzo, will be in attendance at an event noon Thursday, June 6. It's free and open to the public.

Fair designation

The Oregon Country Fair turns 50 this year, July 12-14, and it's been designated an Oregon Heritage Tradition by the Oregon Heritage Commission.

Other "traditions" are the Rose Festival, Oregon State Fair, Pear Blossom Festival in Medford, Pendleton Round-Up and Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana.

It began in 1969 as a fundraiser for an alternative school, and the next year relocated to its current location in Veneta. It serves as a marketplace for an alternative hand-made economy, a trade show of alternative energy and sustainable practices, and a networking opportunity for people interested in living alternative lifestyles and social justice. There are more than 300 juried craft booths, 50 food booths and 20 stages of entertainment. For more: www.oregoncountryfair.org.

Sandcastle fest

The 55th annual Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest takes place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8, with final judging at 2:30 p.m.

It's the oldest competition of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, and there'll be dozens of teams of professional and sculpture artists, amateur groups and familes constructing sandcastles.

'Stumptown'

The anticipated new ABC series "Stumptown," based on graphic novels by Greg Rucka about a Portland private investigator named Dex Parios (played by Cobie Smulders), will air Wednesdays this fall. But, as it turns out, none of the filming will be done in Portland; instead, it'll be done in Los Angeles.

Says ABC: "(Parios) is a strong, assertive and sharp-witted army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon. Her military intelligence skills make her a great PI, but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police."
