New Century Players Community Theater recently named Julie Akers as its new artistic director.
Akers replaces longtime Artistic Director Kelley Marchant, who also left a drama teaching position at Rex Putnam High School to teach for the next two years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
NCP Managing Director Elisabeth Goebel said Akers is likewise a skilled teacher, having conducted courses in directing, acting and theater history, as well as performance art and improvisation.
"She brings a wealth of experience and a new perspective to the position and we are looking forward to her time as our new artistic director," Goebel said. "Her expertise is not limited to theater; ask her about world views in fifth-century Athens."
Akers comes to NCP with a long history of teaching and directing, both across the United States and internationally. From Oregon to Georgia, from Canada to England, she has taught and directed high school, university and professional theatre.
A resident of Oak Grove, Akers has been a member of the NCP board for almost two years. She recently directed "The Cemetery Club" and "The Gin Game" for NCP.
Because of issues related to coronavirus, NCP canceled its remaining shows of the 2019-20 season. In hopes that the COVID-19 situation will improve, NCP is working on a lineup for the 2020-21 season.
