There are roughly 15,000 guardianship cases in Oregon. That means 15,000 instances where one person has the power to make quality of life decisions for another person as their guardian. Guardians are appointed to care for and make medical and placement decisions on behalf of a protected person who is unable to make those decisions for themselves. Protected persons are seniors, people with disabilities, and minors needing Court-appointed support.

Until the launch of Guardian Partners, there was little oversight of these cases. Guardian Partners was started with the goal of providing the Court with trained volunteers to monitor guardianships and ensure protected persons are treated with the utmost respect. Our services have grown to include delivering much needed educational resources and support to guardians, with language interpretation provided, as necessary.

"Our goal is to not only prevent abuse through oversight, but also to teach guardians how to be effective to ensure protected persons are empowered to live their fullest lives. These efforts increase quality of life for seniors, people with disabilities, and children under guardianship care," Steve Knutson, Monitoring Coordinator said. "To grow these important efforts, we need passionate volunteers to conduct wellness assessments of protected persons. Guardian Partners strives to be a national leader regarding issues of guardianship by implementing effective programs that ensure every guardian has the resources, education, and oversight needed to be an effective caretaker. Guardian Partners is providing a one-of-a-kind service within the community in these regards.
