Walking through Van Gogh's world
It's still a couple of months away, but art enthusiasts and technology fans should take note of an upcoming exhibit — "Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience."
Who doesn't love Vincent Van Gogh? Or at least appreciate "The Starry Night," "Sunflowers" and "Cafe Terrace at Night," among the many works painted by the prolific Dutch artist?
"Beyond Van Gogh" will be unlike any experience viewing Van Gogh's art.
Starting Nov. 19, visit the Oregon Convention Center, and you'll enter an immersive world in which Van Gogh paintings will be projected on walls and floors around you. You go from two-dimensional viewing of a painting on a wall to a three-dimensional walk-through — or sit-down — experience.
Tickets are on sale, starting at $36.99 for adults and $24.99 for children (plus fees). See www.vangoghportland.com.
And, it's not just one, two or three works, but more than 300.
The exhibit was created by French-Canadian creative director Mathieu St-Arnaud and his team at Montreal's world-renowned Normal Studio.
"An imaginative and fully immersive adventure, 'Beyond Van Gogh' takes on the challenge of breathing new life into Van Gogh's vast body of work," St-Arnaud said. "Through the use of cutting-edge 3D projection technology and music to illuminate all of his genius, guests can experience the artist with all their senses."
Three areas segue fluidly into one another: Education Room, Waterfall Room, Immersive Experience Room.
Publicity releases say: "Freed from their frames, Van Gogh's spectacular paintings appear on projection-swathed walls inviting guests to fully immerse themselves into the incredible detail of his work and be enveloped in his ever-shifting, swirling and colorful flowers, cafes and stunning landscapes. And, hearing the artists's own dreams, thoughts and words set to a symphonic score drives an unmatched narrative experience."
The exhibit is made possible through Paquin Entertainment, Normal Studio and Beyond Exhibitions.
"This distinctive and unique multimedia artistic adventure is deeply resonating with audiences," said Justin Paquin, Paquin Entertainment co-producer. "Encompassing a refreshing new twist unlike art lovers have seen before, 'Beyond Van Gogh' gives a new appreciation of this tortured artist's stunning work. Unsurprisingly, millions of people all over the world credit Van Gogh with enhancing their relationship with art. 'Beyond Van Gogh' will only strengthen that connection."
