A Tigard production of Disney's musical "Newsies," is set to play Aug. 11 through Aug. 13 at the Broadway Rose Theatre Co.

The show features young performers who have completed a teen summer workshop put on by the theater company. Included are 38 participants, all serious about pursuing musical theater at the high school and college level or professionally in a workshop directed by Isaac Lamb with musical direction by James Pick.

Inspired by a true story, "Newsies" follows "tenacious 20th-century newsboys and girls fighting for their right against a greedy tycoon," according to a news release.COURTESY PHOTO: BROADWAY ROSE THEATRE CO. - 'Crutchie' rehearses with James Pick, musical director for Broadway Rose Theatre Co. "Orphaned 17-year-old Jack dreams of a life as an artist far from the streets of New York, while young reporter Katherine struggles to be heard in a time where women aren't seen as legitimate journalists," stated the release. "Together with Jack's motley crew of newsies, the two must inspire a city of young workers to unionize and strike against unfair conditions, all while the incensed publishing titan Pulitzer attempts to silence them."

The Broadway Rose musical is based on a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. Alan Menkin wrote the music for the performance, the film having been based on Harvey Fierstein's book.

Of course, the performance features the musical's notable production of the hit "Seize the Day."

Broadway Rose teen workshop director Lamb said the students' production of the musical highlights life being in a constant state of upheaval.COURTESY PHOTO: BROADWAY ROSE THEATRE CO. - The full cast of Newsies practice before opening night set for Aug. 11 at Broadway Rose Theatre Co.

"The pandemic, wars, politics, the environment — it feels like the ideal time to do a show about young people dissatisfied with the world around them and determined to fight for change," said Lamb. "It gives me hope to watch them create something that speaks so powerfully to the challenges they are set to inherit."

Pick, who is directing the music for the Broadway Rose Theatre Co. performance, said he's amazed at the talent the young performers have brought to the cast, saying they have been eager to learn the harmonies and "sing them with so much energy and passion."

"From the very start of the week, the students have been open and engaged," said Pick. "They are very focused, and I sense that they understand the importance of this story and its relevance today."

Having grown up with the 1992 Disney film version of "Newsies," Pick said it has been fun to work on the show and explore the musical version for the next generation. The film featured performances from Christian Bale, Bill Pullman and Robert Duvall.

Performances are set for Thursday, Aug. 11, and Friday, Aug. 12, at both 2 and 6 p.m. The Saturday, Aug. 13, show is at 2 p.m.COURTESY PHOTO: BROADWAY ROSE THEATRE CO. - Newsies director Isaac Lamb poses with the teens who play Jack Kelly, left, and Katherine Plumber, right.
