Hannah Scott scores in second half, and Cavaliers dominate for 1-0 finals victory

by: COURTESY OF NAIA - Concordia University's women's soccer team celebrates its national field after winning the title game 1-0 over Westmont College Saturday night at Orange Beach, Ala.ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Concordia University captured its first women's soccer national title Saturday, using its stifling defense to defeat Westmont College 1-0 for the NAIA championship.

Hannah Scott's goal in the 65th minute proved to be the difference. The senior from Milwaukie High struck from the top of the goal box, finding the top corner of the net for her sixth score of the season.

SCOTTThe Cavaliers, who were ranked No. 1 at the end of the regular season, had made the finals three times, coming up short in 2004, 2008 and 2011.

This time, the Cavs came through, capping a 22-1-1 season in which they allowed only seven goals and scored 70.

The national title was the Northeast Portland school's second in athletes. The 2011 Concordia women's track and field team captured the NAIA outdoor crown in 2011.

As was usually the case, Concordia dominated the play and the attack on Saturday. The Cavaliers outshot Westmont, from Santa Barbara, Calif., 24-4.

Cavaliers goalie Olivia Brock need to make only one save, while Warriors goalie Lindsey Smith was credited with six stops.
