Hillsboro, which won the Northwest League South first-half title, is leading the second-half race as well.

Hillsboro is 9-4 with just less than one month remaining before the league playoffs. Also in the South, Salem-Keizer is 8-5, Eugene 7-6 and Boise 6-7.


Lewis & Clark has named Asha Jordan as its new women’s basketball coach.

A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Jordan played her final two seasons at Occidental, graduating in 2009. She was an assistant coach there last season, after serving as director of women’s basketball operations at Pepperdine.


The Portland Barbers placed second in the American Legion AAA state baseball tournament at Grants Pass.

The Barbers lost only to the champion Medford Mustangs in the double-elimination tourney, falling 10-1 last Thursday and then 6-1 on Sunday, when Portland needed back-to-back victories to claim the crown.

The Barbers, coached by Joe Duran and comprised of players from Madison, Reynolds, Central Catholic and Liberty high schools, advanced to the championship round with wins of 6-4 over Roseburg’s Dr. Stewart’s, 11-5 over the Dallas DeMarini Dirtbags and 11-1 against the Corvallis Gerding Builders Marketmen.

• Rick Lorenz of Central Catholic has been named national volleyball coach of the year by the National High School Coaches Association. Lorenz has spent the past 27 years of his 39-year head coaching career with the Rams, winning state titles in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and taking CC to second place in the 2013 Class 6A tournament. His teams have won 10 state titles in all, including five when he was at St. Mary’s Academy, and he has more than 1,100 career victories.


Portland’s Western Hockey League club has added Keith McKittrick to its revamped coaching staff for the 2014-15 season.

McKittrick will join new coach/general manager Jamie Kompon and returning assistant coach Kyle Gustafson on the bench for the reigning Western Conference champions, who lost Mike Johnston as coach/GM after last season when Johnston became head coach of the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins.

McKittrick spent the past six seasons with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL, the last two as assistant coach/video.

The Winterhawks’ first preseason game is Aug. 29, and the WHL regular season for Portland begins Sept. 19 with a home game against Seattle.


Pros Mark Keating (Pumpkin Ridge) and Scott Krieger (Broadmoor) tied for second in the Senior Oregon Open Invitational. Their 13-under-par totals of 203 trailed winner Todd Erwin (Tacoma Firs) by six shots.

• At Redmond’s Juniper Golf Club, Randy Mahar of Portland won his second consecutive Oregon Senior Stroke Play Championship. Mahar fired a 4-under 68 in last Sunday’s final round to finish the Oregon Golf Association tourney at even 216, two shots in front of Byron Patton of Tigard. Portland’s Scott Carver (224) claimed the Master-40 Division title by one shot over Eugene’s Cody Pinkston, with Portland’s Scott Hval tied for third at 226.
